The Foundation of a Great Wig: Getting the Fit Right
The most beautiful wig in the world won't look or feel its best if it doesn't fit correctly. A wig that's too large will shift and slip throughout the day. One that's too small will feel uncomfortably tight and can cause headaches. Getting your measurements right before you shop is the simplest way to ensure every wig you buy fits beautifully from the first wear.
The good news: measuring your head for a wig is quick and easy, and you only need a soft fabric tape measure. Let's walk through exactly how it's done.
What You'll Need
- A soft fabric tape measure (not a rigid metal one)
- A mirror
- A pen and paper to record your measurements
If you don't have a fabric tape measure, a piece of string will work — measure the string against a ruler afterward.
The Three Key Measurements
1. Circumference (Head Circumference)
This is the most important measurement. Starting at your natural hairline at the centre of your forehead, bring the tape measure around the perimeter of your head — around the back, above the ears, and back to the starting point. Keep the tape snug but not tight. This measurement tells you whether you need a petite, average, or large cap size.
- Petite: Under 53cm
- Average: 53–57cm (fits most people)
- Large: Over 57cm
2. Front to Back (Forehead to Nape)
Place the tape at the centre of your natural hairline at your forehead, then bring it straight back over the crown and down to the nape of your neck (where your hairline ends at the back). This measurement helps you identify how a wig's parting will sit and whether the cap will provide adequate coverage at the nape.
3. Ear to Ear Across the Crown
Starting at the top of one ear, bring the tape up and over the crown of your head to the top of the other ear. This measurement ensures the side sections of the wig will sit correctly and the cap won't be too narrow or too wide across your head.
Standard Sizing
Most wigs in our synthetic collection are sized for an average head circumference of 53–57cm, which fits the majority of adults. The adjustable straps inside the cap allow for a customised fit within this range — most caps can be adjusted by 2–3cm in either direction.
Tips for a Better Fit
- If you're between sizes, size up rather than down — a wig that's slightly large can be adjusted with the internal straps, while a wig that's too small cannot be made more comfortable.
- Wear your wig cap when measuring if you plan to always wear one — the wig cap adds a small amount of circumference.
- If your head circumference is at the smaller end of average (around 53cm), double-check that the cap's adjustment straps will tighten enough for a secure fit before purchasing.
Cap Constructions and Fit
Different cap constructions sit differently on the head. Lace front wigs need to be positioned so the lace sits precisely at your natural hairline — too far forward looks unnatural, too far back leaves a gap. Fringe cap wigs are more forgiving in their placement, as the fringe covers the front edge of the cap naturally.
