How to Travel with Your Wigs: Packing, Storing & Arriving in Style

Take Your Wig Collection Wherever Life Takes You

Travelling with wigs doesn't have to be stressful. With a little planning and the right packing strategy, your favourite styles can arrive at your destination looking just as beautiful as they do at home. Whether you're heading interstate for a weekend or embarking on an international trip, here's everything you need to know about travelling with your wigs.

Packing a Single Wig for Travel

For short trips where you're bringing one or two wigs, the key is maintaining the shape of the cap and protecting the fibres from tangling or crushing. The best approaches:

  • Wig box with the head form: If you have a collapsible wig head or a dedicated travel wig box, this is the most protective option. The wig sits on the head form maintaining its shape, and the box protects it from external pressure.
  • Stuffing with tissue: If you're packing a wig in your bag without a head form, gently stuff the cap with soft tissue or a small, soft cloth to maintain the cap's rounded shape. Then wrap the wig loosely in a silk or satin bag — these fabrics are gentle on synthetic fibres and won't cause frizz or static.
  • Separate bag: Always pack wigs in their own dedicated bag, away from clothing and toiletries that could compress or contaminate them.

Travelling with Multiple Wigs

Building a mini travel wig wardrobe is one of the joys of being a wig lover — you can pack a different style for every day of your trip. For multiple wigs:

  • Dedicate a specific packing cube or bag exclusively to your wig collection
  • Stack wigs carefully — each wig in its own silk bag — alternating the direction they face to reduce bulk
  • Travel wigs wisely: bring your most versatile, go-anywhere styles rather than your most delicate pieces. Our short wig styles and medium lengths pack most easily

Carry-On vs Checked Luggage

Always pack wigs in your carry-on if possible. Checked luggage is subject to compression, temperature extremes, and rough handling — none of which are good for delicate wig fibres. A wig in your carry-on is also accessible if you want to switch styles mid-journey.

Security screening is not a problem — wigs go through the x-ray scanner in your bag without any issues. You don't need to remove them separately or declare them.

Setting Up at Your Destination

As soon as you arrive, remove your wigs from their travel bags and place them on portable wig stands or wig heads. Even a few hours of airing after travel makes a significant difference to how the wig looks when you put it on. If the wig has developed any travel wrinkles or flattening, a light mist of wig refresher spray and some gentle finger-styling will restore the look.

Essential Travel Wig Kit

Pack a small wig care kit for every trip:

  • Wide-tooth travel comb
  • Wig refresher spray (decant into a small bottle if flying)
  • A few wig pins or bobby pins for securing the wig
  • Spare wig cap
  • Small amount of edge control for lace front styling
