Wig Density Explained: How to Find Your Perfect Volume

Wig Density Explained: How to Find Your Perfect Volume

More Than Just Length and Colour: Why Density Changes Everything

When most people shop for wigs, they focus primarily on colour and length — and rightly so, these are the most visible characteristics. But there's another element that has a profound effect on how a wig looks and feels: density. Get the density right, and your wig looks natural, proportionate, and perfectly suited to your head size and face shape. Get it wrong, and even the most beautiful colour and length can look off.

This guide will walk you through everything you need to understand about wig density, so you can shop our synthetic wig collection with total confidence.

What Is Wig Density?

Wig density refers to how much fibre is used in the construction of the wig — essentially, how thick or thin the hair is. A wig with low density will appear finer and lighter, while a wig with high density will appear thicker, fuller, and more voluminous.

Density is usually expressed as a percentage relative to natural hair. The most common density levels are:

  • 80–100% density: Light density. Very fine, natural-looking volume. Good for wigs that need to look like very fine or thinning natural hair, or for people who find heavier wigs uncomfortable.
  • 120–130% density: Natural density. This is the most common and versatile density — it mimics the average volume of natural hair and suits most wearers and styles.
  • 150% density: Medium-heavy density. A noticeable step up in fullness. This density is popular for styles where extra body and volume are desirable, particularly for longer wigs where the weight of the hair can otherwise make it look thin at the ends.
  • 180–200% density: Heavy density. Very full, voluminous, and dramatically thick. Popular for styles where maximum impact is the goal.

How Density Affects Different Wig Styles

Short wigs: Lower density works well for short wigs — too much volume in a short style can look unnatural or disproportionately large. Our short wig collection is crafted with appropriate density for each style's length.

Medium wigs: Natural density (120–130%) is perfect for medium length styles — enough volume to look full and healthy without overwhelming the silhouette.

Long wigs: Medium-to-heavy density is often preferred for long wigs because longer fibres naturally appear thinner at the ends — extra density compensates for this and ensures the style looks lush throughout its length.

Density and Cap Construction

Density interacts with cap construction in interesting ways. A lace front wig will always have lower density at the very hairline (because individual fibres are hand-tied into delicate lace) and higher density through the body of the wig. This is actually what makes lace fronts look so natural — the gradual density increase from hairline to crown mimics the way natural hair grows.

Choosing the Right Density for You

Consider your natural hair when choosing density. If your natural hair is fine and you wear wigs frequently, choosing a very high-density wig may look disproportionate against your features. Conversely, if you're accustomed to thick, full hair, a light-density wig might feel underwhelming.

The good news is that our team is always on hand to help guide you through the selection process, and our product descriptions give clear indications of the density and fullness of each style. For the ultimate in density customisation, human hair wigs at MH Wigs can sometimes be ordered in custom densities.
